KARACHI - Pakistani star actor and model Mehwish Hayat has pleaded for help in the international media, saying it's time to do more than just post sympathy as floods have left more than 1,200 dead and millions homeless.
The 34-year-old global ambassador for the Penny Appeal was invited to give her views on Sky News and the BBC, where she called for urgent help and stressed that the devastation caused by the floods was vast and immense.
The actor also shared clips on his social media citingmedia citing reports of the devastation caused after the record rains.
The Actor in Law star said that at least 50 million people are currently displaced, 1,500 deaths have been reported that we know of, but there are so many areas that people and aid agencies can't access to reach the people who are actually they need help now
She went on to mention many dilemmas and said that at least 70,000 pregnant women are expected to give birth in the coming days and lamented that they do not have shelter, food or clean drinking water for them. Millions of already deprived people have now lost everything and have to restart their lives, she added.
Mehwish mentioned working with a charity to get help wherever needed. The Penny Appeal is on the ground in disaster-stricken areas, telling of the disaster and the fact that so much help is needed on every front.
"If you save one life, you save the world and with your little help, whatever you can spare can help save thousands of precious lives," she added.
Besides the lack of basic necessities of life, Mehwish, who received the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, also highlighted water-borne diseases, which are already a challenge for many regions.
She described the coming winter as "one of the hardest months of the year" and said spending the freezing nights without shelter was terrifying. She also mentioned that officials reported at least 10 billion worth of damage, saying it would take years to get back to normal.
In another interview with the British national broadcaster, the actor emphasized that medical help, sustainable food that lasts longer and shelter are needed because people's income is gone and they are literally starting from scratch.
